Most D2C brands spend almost all their marketing effort winning the first order, then let customers drift away. A handful of automated WhatsApp and email flows can change that — and they keep working while you sleep.
These are the five we set up first for almost every brand.
1. Abandoned cart and checkout recovery
Shoppers add to cart, get distracted and leave. A short sequence — a WhatsApp reminder within the first hour, then a follow-up email — brings many of them back. Show the exact products they left, answer common doubts (delivery time, returns, COD) and keep any discount for the final message, not the first.
2. Welcome series
New subscribers are at their most interested right after they sign up. A three-to-four message welcome series introduces your brand story, your best-sellers and real customer reviews, then gives them a clear reason to place a first order.
3. Post-purchase flow
The time between “order placed” and “delivered” is when buyers worry most. Send order and shipping updates, how-to-use content and, once the product arrives, a review request. Good post-purchase messaging reduces returns and support tickets — and sets up the second order.
4. Replenishment and cross-sell
If your products run out — skincare, supplements, food, home care — remind customers when it’s likely time to reorder. For everything else, recommend the products that customers who bought the same item tend to buy next.
5. Win-back
Customers who haven’t bought in a while aren’t lost yet. A win-back flow checks in, shows what’s new and, if needed, offers a reason to return. After that, it’s healthy to stop messaging people who never engage.
Getting the basics right
- Consent first. Only message customers who opted in, and make it easy to opt out.
- Write for a phone screen. Short lines, one clear button, no walls of text.
- Segment by behaviour. First-time buyers, repeat buyers and lapsed customers need different messages.
- Track revenue per flow. Then improve the flows that matter most.
